How to Care for Hi-Fi Speakers: Cabinets, Drivers and Moving

To care for Hi-Fi speakers, keep the routine simple: protect delicate parts, use a cleaning method approved for the finish and handle the cabinet securely. A speaker can combine wood, paint, metal, fabric and fragile moving parts, so one cleaning product is not suitable for every surface.

Always begin with the instructions for your exact model. If the finish or driver material is unclear, ask the manufacturer before trying a treatment intended for ordinary furniture.

Clean cabinets gently

For routine cabinet dust, a clean, soft, dry cloth is a conservative starting point when allowed by the manufacturer. Use light pressure and check that the cloth has not picked up grit. Keep liquids away from drivers, ports, terminals and electronics.

Do not assume that furniture polish, solvents or an all-purpose cleaner are safe. Dynaudio’s care guidance, for example, warns that aggressive cleaners and furniture polishes can damage speaker surfaces. Its instructions apply to its products; ask Bache Audio for guidance specific to your cabinet finish.

If dry dusting is insufficient, stop and confirm the approved method rather than increasing pressure or experimenting with moisture. Cleaning should preserve the finish, not gradually change its appearance.

Leave delicate drivers alone

A tweeter dome is not a cabinet surface. Do not press, wipe or try to reshape it. Avoid directing a vacuum nozzle or compressed air at speaker drivers. A small cosmetic mark is a reason to ask for advice, not to improvise a repair.

Different cone and dome materials need different handling. Dynaudio’s tweeter-cleaning article illustrates why ordinary household cleaning techniques can be risky. Do not transfer a method from another brand or driver type without confirmation.

Protect the everyday setup

Keep drinks, plant pots and loose decorative objects off the cabinets. Consider direct sunlight, nearby heat sources and the manufacturer’s environmental recommendations when choosing a location. If grilles are supplied, follow the instructions for attaching and removing them; do not assume they make the drivers impact-proof.

Make sure stands and feet are stable and appropriate for the floor. Route cables so that a person or pet cannot easily pull them. Where floor protectors or other accessories are needed, use suitable parts and check that the speaker remains secure.

Check connections with the system off

Before moving a speaker or touching its connections, switch off the amplifier and follow its instructions. Inspect accessible cable ends for looseness or stray strands. Keep the left and right connections and polarity clearly identified.

Do not overtighten terminals or open the cabinet to investigate a new sound. If a buzz appears, first check whether a nearby object is vibrating. If the problem seems to come from the speaker itself, note the track, playback level and affected side, then contact support.

Prepare carefully before moving speakers

  1. Photograph the connections and disconnect cables with the equipment off.
  2. Clear the route and arrange enough help for the cabinet’s weight.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s recommended lifting points; never lift by a driver, grille or terminal.
  4. Protect the finish with suitable packaging, preferably the original materials.
  5. Recheck stability, wiring and placement before restarting at low volume.

Keep purchase information, serial numbers and packaging details together. They make a future service question easier to describe and reduce guesswork if the speakers need to be transported.

How often should I clean my speakers?

Use gentle cabinet dusting as needed for your room. Drivers do not need routine touching, and a more elaborate cleaning schedule is not automatically better.
